The series record
Florida leads. The teams have played every year since 1958 except 2020, when the pandemic put the SEC on a conference-only schedule.
In Gainesville. Florida has won the last two.

Every game at a glance
One square per game since 1958, a row per decade. Hover or tap a square for the score. The two Sugar Bowls sit in the row for the season they belong to, so 1994 and 1996 each have two squares.
2026 is the day after Thanksgiving
This year's game is Friday, Nov. 27, at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee. Florida's schedule release last December had it on Saturday the 28th, and Florida State moved it to the Friday when it announced kickoff times in May. How to watch has the network and the radio call.
Florida came into this season having won the last two. In 2024 it won 31-11 in Tallahassee, which handed Florida State its first double-digit-loss season in 50 years. After that one, George Gumbs Jr. planted a Florida flag on the midfield logo and started a brief scuffle. Last year, with Billy Gonzales as interim coach, Florida won 40-21 in Gainesville and Jadan Baugh ran for 266 yards, a series record. The result left both teams with losing records, only the third time that has happened since the series began.
How it got started
Florida State began giving football scholarships in 1951 and wanted the game. Florida didn't. Wikipedia's account says UF's administration was "reluctant to treat Florida State University as an equal." A 1955 bill in the Legislature to make the schools play each other was voted down. Gov. LeRoy Collins then asked UF president J. Wayne Reitz to set up a series, and the first game went into the first open date on Florida's schedule: Nov. 22, 1958, in Gainesville, No. 12 Florida 21, Florida State 7.
Doak Campbell Stadium held fewer than 20,000 then, so the first contract put every game at Florida Field. The first six were in Gainesville, and the site has gone back and forth since 1964.
Spurrier and Bowden
Steve Spurrier went 5-8-1 against Bobby Bowden's teams from 1990 to 2001, counting two Sugar Bowls, and Bowden finished his career 17-18-1 against Florida. Three of them:
- 1994: Florida led 31-3 after three quarters in Tallahassee, and Florida State scored 28 in the fourth for a 31-31 tie, the "Choke at Doak." Florida State won the Sugar Bowl rematch 23-17 on Jan. 2, 1995, sealed when Derrick Brooks intercepted Danny Wuerffel.
- 1996: No. 2 Florida State beat No. 1 Florida 24-21 in Tallahassee, both teams undefeated. Ohio State beat Arizona State in the Rose Bowl the night before the Sugar Bowl rematch, which turned it into the title game. Florida won 52-20 for its first national championship, and Wuerffel threw for 306 yards and three touchdowns.
- 1997: No. 10 Florida beat undefeated Florida State 32-29 in Gainesville on a late Fred Taylor touchdown run. Wikipedia's page on that 1997 team calls it the "greatest game ever played in the Swamp."
Biggest wins and longest runs
- Florida's biggest win is 49-0 in Gainesville in 1973.
- Florida State's is 52-17 in Tallahassee in 1988.
- Florida won nine straight from 1968 to 1976. Florida State's longest run is five, 2013 to 2017, and Florida ended it with a 41-14 win in Tallahassee in 2018.
- In 1966 in Tallahassee, a late Florida State touchdown pass to Lane Fenner was ruled incomplete, and Florida held on 22-19. The debate over that call has never really ended.
- By site, through 2025: Florida is 23-13-1 in Gainesville and 15-14-1 in Tallahassee.
The trophies
The winner gets the Makala Trophy, which dates to 1958. FBSchedules calls it one of the least-known rivalry trophies in the country, and it isn't handed over on the field: it's presented at a banquet in St. Petersburg on the weekend of the winning school's spring game.
The Florida Cup, started in 2002 by the Florida Sports Foundation, goes to whichever of Florida, Florida State and Miami beats the other two in the same season, so it's only in play when Florida also plays Miami. Florida won it in 2008 and 2019.
