No game in 2026

This is the first season since 1989 without a Florida-Tennessee game. The SEC plays nine conference games now, and Florida's three permanent opponents are Georgia, Kentucky and South Carolina. Tennessee isn't one of them, so the series goes to every other year. Florida plays in Knoxville in 2027, and Tennessee comes back to Gainesville in 2029.

The last two went to Tennessee: 23-17 in overtime in Knoxville in 2024, then 31-11 in Gainesville last November, the Vols' first win at Florida since 2003.

The Spurrier and Fulmer years

The game became a yearly one in 1990, and when the SEC split into divisions in 1992 both teams landed in the East. It was usually played early in the season, which is where the "Third Saturday in September" nickname comes from.

Steve Spurrier's first trip to Knoxville as Florida's coach ended 45-3 Tennessee in 1990, still the biggest margin in the series. Florida went 7-3 against the Vols in the 1990s anyway, and the 41-34 win in 1993 was Phillip Fulmer's first loss as Tennessee's head coach.

The 2001 game was set for Sept. 15 and moved to Dec. 1 after the September 11 attacks, with the SEC East riding on it. Tennessee won 34-32 in Gainesville, its first win there in 30 years, and went on to play LSU for the SEC title.

Biggest wins and longest runs

  • Tennessee's biggest win is that 45-3 game in 1990. It also won 40-0 in 1944.
  • Florida's biggest is 59-20 in Gainesville in 2007.
  • Florida won 11 straight from 2005 to 2015. Tennessee ended it in Knoxville in 2016, coming back from 21-0 down to win 38-28.
  • In 2017 Feleipe Franks threw a 63-yard Hail Mary to Tyrie Cleveland with nine seconds left, and Florida won 26-20.
  • The only bowl meeting was the 1969 Gator Bowl, 14-13 Florida. Tennessee's coach that day, Doug Dickey, then took the Florida job and coached the Gators from 1970.
